You can appear for JEE Advanced 2026 if you are among the top 2,50,000 successful candidates (including all categories) in JEE Main 2026 paper 1 and are born on or after October 1, 2001 (A five-year age relaxation is given to SC, ST, and PwD candidates). If you have already attempted JEE Advanced twice, you cannot attempt it again this year. However, if you have attempted JEE Advanced in 2025, you can attempt it again in 2026. Candidates must check and understand the JEE Advanced 2026 eligibility criteria as the first step of their preparation for the upcoming IIT admission session.

Note that candidates do not need any minimum marks in class 12 to be eligible for JEE Advanced 2026 exam; however, for IIT admission, they must have a minimum 75% (65% for SC, ST and PWD) marks in class 12.

JEE Advanced is the second-stage test (after JEE Main) for aspiring IIT students. Remember, only the top 2.5 lakh performers in JEE Main get to challenge JEE Advanced. It’s your doorway to the prestigious IITs and is considered one of the toughest exams in the world. The exam is conducted annually by one of the 7 IITs or IISc Bangalore in CBT mode, under the aegis of the Joint Admission Board (JAB).

Annual test takers

In the last session, a total of 1,87,223 candidates signed up to take the JEE Advanced exam. Out of these, 1,80,422 participated in both papers of the exam. From this group, 54,378 students were successful and qualified for admission into the Indian Institutes of Technology (IITs).

Dynamic exam pattern

What adds to the difficulty level of the JEE Advanced exam is its dynamic exam pattern. Unlike many entrance exams, where the exam marking scheme and other details are notified to the candidates beforehand, IIT JEE Advanced likes to keep them a secret until the exam day. Only aspects of the exam pattern that are notified beforehand are:

  • The exam has two papers – Paper 1 and Paper 2. Both papers are compulsory.
  • Paper 1 has three sections – Physics, Chemistry and Maths. The same goes for Paper 2.
  • Each paper is of three hours duration.
  • The exam is held in CBT mode with questions displayed in English and Hindi.
  • The marking scheme, number of questions and the types of questions asked are revealed on the exam day.

What does the JEE Advanced exam offer?

  • Entry to undergraduate courses like B.Tech, B.Sc, B.Arch, etc, offered by the IITs.
  • Admission to Integrated Master’s and Dual Degree programs offered by the IITs.
  • IIT seat selection through JoSAA, based on JEE Advanced rank and preference.

What courses can you pursue after qualifying JEE Advanced?

  • BTech in various Engineering disciplines.
  • BSc programs in Science.
  • BArch in Architecture.
  • Dual Degree programs like B.Tech-MTech and BS-MS.
  • Integrated MTech and Integrated MSc programs.

Those who qualify in the JEE Advanced exam are offered seats in IITs based on their course preference and JEE Advanced ranks via a common process by the Joint Seat Allocation Authority (JoSAA).
